WCA-DC It's that time of year to Renew!

Membership applications can be processed online through the National website, or through our local Chapter. National WCA rates remain unchanged at $40 per year. Members can also apply or renew online by going to http://www.nationalwca.org/applicants/application.php. Mail to Local Chapter: P.O. Box 53125 Washington, D.C.  20009. Exhibit Opportunities

1. Drexel University, Technically Philly, (PEC) People's Emergency Center, and Flying Kite are putting together an event on Friday, October 12 from 5-9 p.m.  There is still space for tech folks, creatives, entrepreneurs, start ups, crafters, and vendors to join in on a pop up event.   We are inviting you to be an exhibitor in the event.  We will create a pop up party, NeXt, in the space located at 3848-52 Lancaster Avenue (used in 2011 as part of LooK! on Lancaster Avenue).  We are providing several projectors, tables for organizations and vendors,  a playroom where folks can demo their gaming and technology, and space for the exhibition of visual arts.  There is ample space for 3D sculptures and interactive artwork.  All spaces are provided for free for the exhibitors.  We will provide a table for you at the event, and we will include your logo on materials and publicity.  

The party occurs in conjunction with the Second Friday event and the Make Your Mark! Release Party.  The event will be catered.

2. WCA NATIONAL CALL FOR ART

LIVING IN THE USA

Juror: Maria Mijares

Mijares studied fine art, literature and philosophy at New England School of Art in Boston, MA, painting at Art Students League in Woodstock, NY, and earned a BA in Fine Art from Rutgers University.
Her work was awarded two Painting Fellowships from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts, and the Ludwig Vogelstein Foundation, Inc.(NY) among other honors.
Her contemporary realist paintings have been exhibited nationally and abroad in museum, university, corporate, and alternative galleries.
Mijares’ four large-scale porcelain enamel onsteel murals, entitled “Between Manhattan and Meadowlands” are installed at Hudson-Bergen Light Rail Transit System’s Bergenline Avenue Station in Union City, NJ.
She has lectured at museums, schools, hospitals, community, cancer and caregivers’ support groups, and is featured in two books—a textbook “Fearless Creating”  (Dr. Eric Maisel, 1995, G.P. Putnam’s Sons, and “Artists Observed” Harvey Stein, 1986, Harry N. Abrams, Inc., NYC.
She is currently preparing for an upcoming one-woman exhibition at the MORRIS MUSEUM (December13, 2012 – March 17, 2013), “IMMORTAL STRUCTURES: Here and There After.”   www.mariamijares.com

Event: Pyramid Atlantic Up Scale Yard Sale

We will have a hands on papermaking demonstration, hot dogs on the grill and a parking lot filled with items that include gold and silver coins, antique furniture, vintage toys, high-end and wall art, china, stemware, records, a few still-in-the-box electronics, home decor, jewelry and much,much more.

This event is being co-presented with the fabulous folks from Orion's Attic. Proceeds from this event will benefit arts and education programs at Pyramid Atlantic.

Open call for New Media and Video seeks to enrich the creative process by cultivating awareness of and fostering dialogue about innovative projects on visual arts. Multiple projects will be selected for Artisphere’s different spaces via new media technologies and reviewed by a selection committee which includes Artisphere staff. Works in Progress Gallery 
The Works in Progress (WIP) Gallery is situated at the entrance to the Terrance Gallery. The WIP Gallery investigates and exhibits works-in-progress from multiple creative disciplines. By examining different processes, structures, experiments, projects and artwork, the WIP provides the public a window into the creative process. Calls will be posted here for the WIP Gallery when time slots become available.

Mezz Gallery
The Mezz Gallery at Artisphere promotes the work of artists and curators who live, work, study or have a studio in Arlington, Virginia as well as artists from our Sister Cities program. (Aachen, Germany; Reims, France; and Oaxaca and Coyoácan, Mexico.) Artists and curators may propose individual or group exhibits to be featured along the 140 running feet of wall space. Group shows may feature work from non-Arlington artists so long as the curator meets the requirements. Shows are scheduled one to two years in advance. Calls for entries for the next exhibition schedule will be posted in 2013.

Doris Staffel (born 1921), a former student of both Philip Guston and Hans Hofmann, is one of Philadelphia's preeminent abstract painters and colorists. In honor of her long commitment to the city's arts community, Woodmere will present an exhibition of fourteen paintings and works on paper by Staffel from Woodmere's collection, pieces that represent the various phases of her career from the 1940s to the present, along with loans from public and private collections. Read more >>
Generations: Louise Fishman, Gertrude Fisher-Fishman, and Razel Kapustin 
October 13, 2012 – January 6, 2013
The exhibition explores the relationships between the art of Louise Fishman (b. 1939) and the work of both her mother Gertrude Fisher-Fishman (b. 1916) and her aunt Razel Kapustin (1908-1968). Key pieces by the three artists, each of whom is represented in Woodmere's collection, will be exhibited together, underscoring the pictorial, philosophical, and emotive relationships between three distinct artistic voices. Learn More >>

(New) Franz and Virginia Bader Fund Grants for Artists 2012 - DC
Deadline: September 15, 12. The Franz and Virginia Bader Fund invites visual artists (excluding filmmakers, video artists, and performance artists) to apply for grants to enable recipients to develop their talent and concentrate on their art. Artists must be 40 years or older, and must live within 150 miles of Washington, DC. Three grants totaling $60,000 were awarded in 2011. Applications must be postmarked no later than September 15, 2011.  Application forms are available for download from  www.baderfund.org.  Send email inquiries to grants@baderfund.org or call 202-288-4608.
