Theme/Background for Call for Art
Almost a half-century ago, Chairman Mao Zedong, who famously said "Women hold up half the sky," believed women's active participation in reform would solve China's economic and societal challenges. More recently, women and men leaders across the world are calling for women's voices to be heard in all decision making. The theme is now a movement, a documentary, a musical recording. Michelle Bachelet, head of UN Women, opened the UN Commission on the Status of Women 2013 conference by extolling the benefits of being 53% of the world's population.  "Women do not need permission, they simply need to speak and act."

Artists are encouraged to interpret this theme broadly. What does it mean to be the majority of the world's population? What must women do to hold up their "half"? How do women from different cultures interpret this responsibility, this call to action? How do we encourage and support each other through art?

Theme/Background for Call for Essays
LuXun Academy has asked us to have an essay component to the catalog related to the topic of Contemporary Art Practices of Women in the US. Are there any remaining and defining boundaries to women's art practices and how does this relate to a definition of art as a whole? Are there still niches of art practice particular to a woman's perspective? What are the roots of Social Practice Art in relation to women's art history? How are Social Practice Art academic programs shaping the work of women artists? This art-based cultural exchange project with its opportunities for building community and common understanding, collaborative art creation, and dialogue is, in itself, a piece of Social Practice Art. How are such works critiqued? How do we put Social Practice works in context with other art forms? Which women artists in the United States are creating excitement in today's art marketplace and/or influencing art practices?

"Eye on the D: Seeing Detroit with New Eyes"
This show focuses on the rich multi-textured character of the city of Detroit in the midst of radical change. Whether it's the current physical landscape, evolving neighborhoods or political makeup, show us evidence of a re-imagined terrain. What is the next chapter in the story of this quintessential American city, or what whispers not to be forgotten? Detroit's historic artistic achievements are monumental - the architecture of Albert Kahn and Eliel Saarinen, the auto industry's design revolution, the public murals of Diego Rivera and the intensely personal work of Frida Kahlo, the music of Motown and Hip Hop. Recent creative momentum has given voice to a new vision of the city in this post-Fordian post-modern era and gained national and international attention. How do you see the city of the future, the city in your imagination, what inspires you about Detroit?
Last year the Michigan Chapter of the Women's Caucus for Art gave a Detroit Art Tour for attendees of the National WCA Summer Board Meeting. Response was so great that the Michigan Chapter organized this exhibition to instigate a national response to our city, and to hear from artists from around Michigan and especially from Detroit about how they see this time of crisis and regeneration.

Eligibility: All self-defined women artists nation wide may submit up to 3 works of any medium including video and performance.

The exhibition will take place at 555 Gallery, Detroit, from November 1 - 21, 2013. Sponsored by the Women's Caucus for Art, Michigan.

OPEN CALL FOR WORK
Call for the Halls

Capitol Arts Network is calling all metro DC area artists for a tremendous opportunity to showcase your work in our new art center located in the heart of Montgomery County, Maryland. Hanging system has been installed throughout our hallways and we look forward to showcasing the work of a wide variety of talented area artists for two months at a time. Each participating artist will have the opportunity to hang up to three pieces in our gorgeous light-filled building and the work will remain up for two First Friday gallery openings that CAN hosts along with the Washington School of Photography in our amazing new 27,000 square foot building on Wilkins Avenue in Rockville.
Artists and their guests are invited to the two First Friday openings during the run of their show to visit and enjoy the "Halls" show along with the current show in the 1100 square foot gallery, and the chance to see our 31 resident artists' studios.

Work will be hung on a first come-first served basis, so early birds will indeed snag the best placement spots in our building. Capitol Arts Network is acutely aware that display opportunities for metro area artists are disappearing, and in our efforts to build and sustain community we are excited to offer this fantastic new venue and a gathering place for artists of all disciplines. Up to three pieces for two months, just $50. A nominal 25% commission on sales taken by the gallery.
