The Female Gaze: Women Artists Making Their World
Friday, November 16, 2012, 6:30 - 8:30 p.m.
Free to PAFA Members! Non-Member Tickets $10 advance or $15 at the door (based on availability.
Linda Lee Alter Collection of Art by Women is a collection of close to 500 works of art (including paintings, photographs, drawings, watercolors, pastels, collage, prints, fabric pieces, ceramics, bronze, wood, and sculpture in other media) by over 150 artists. It came to PAFA as a gift in December 2010 from Linda Lee Alter. The gift (its scope, theme, and size) is unprecedented in PAFA’s history. It includes works by artists PAFA did not yet have in its collection such as Louise Bourgeois, Joan Brown, Viola Frey, Ana Mendieta, Christina Ramberg, Kiki Smith, and Beatrice Wood (among others) to complementary works by artists already in the collection including Gertrude Abercrombie, Edna Andrade, Sue Coe, Janet Fish, Sarah McEneaney, Alice Neel, Louise Nevelson, Gladys Nilsson, Elizabeth Osborne, Betye Saar, Nancy Spero, and many others. When Ms. Alter began collecting in the mid-1980s, she realized that despite the monumental efforts of the Women’s’ movement, female artists had far fewer opportunities for visibility than their male counterparts. Ms. Alter decided to work to correct this imbalance, making the conscious decision to assemble a multi-generational collection of art made by women that reveals the stylistic diversity, range of subject matter, and high quality of work being made by female artists.

As you know, we just held the Frankford Fall Music and Arts Fest this past weekend. We had a blast and hope you did too. With your help, we brought St. Mark's to life and drove lots of traffic into the neighborhood. We also collected over 50 can goods that will be donated to St. Mark's meal programs.
You can check out photos from Thursday's Art Opening and Saturday's Event in this week's edition of Flying Kite: http://flyingkitemedia.com/features/flyingphotofrankfordartsmusic1113.aspx.
Also, we'd like to invite you to apply for our next event, the Frankford Holiday Craft Market. We expect up to 40 vendors, live music, holiday treats, and more. The event takes place on Saturday, December 15 from 11AM-4PM. Free admission to the public. Vendors selling products are asked to pay a $15 fee. Those hosting activity tables (no selling) or info tables (community groups/non-profits) will have this fee waived.
Application is here:http://www.jotform.us/micheemichee/holidaymarket.
