Theme Wings From Chains invites artists to consider women’s roles and responsibilities in society —  yesterday, today, and tomorrow — and explore the transformation from oppression to liberation, shame to pride, or drudgery into art.  Contemporary, historical, stereotypical, and fictional references are all welcome. Possible concepts might include: Transforming a traditional/stereotypical female home chore such as quilting, cooking, or scrubbing floors into high art.  This might be about the chore and it might use materials associated with the chore. Transforming the real or implied shackles of traditional gender norms into a means of retribution or liberation. Transforming the perception of an oppressed fictional or historic female character into story of freedom and satisfaction. Exploring what women might find within themselves when faced with an oppressive mantle or situation - and the process of turning things around. Creative interpretations of the theme are encouraged.Selection Criteria Works for inclusion in Wings From Chains will be selected by Athenaeum Gallery Director, Twig Murray.  Primary consideration will be given to works that represent artistic excellence, successful interpretation of the theme, and selecting a group of individual works that create a solid exhibition. Eligibility Artists who live or work in Virginia, Maryland, or the District of Columbia may submit work. Artwork Specifications Work must be available for exhibition from February 4 — March 13, 2016. All visual media is welcome, but every work must be wall-mounted.  Work must be less than 9 inches deep. Painting, drawing, collage, etc. must be framed or fully finished, wired, and ready to hang on picture hooks.  Sculpture must be less than 9 inches deep and lighter than 30 pounds. Entries that do not comply with the rules will be disqualified. Delivery/Shipping The artist is responsible for getting, or arranging to have their work delivered, to the Athenaeum Gallery by Sunday afternoon, January 31, 2016. The artist is responsible for picking up, or arranging to have unsold works picked up, on Sunday afternoon, March 13, 2016. The Athenaeum is not responsible for works left in the gallery after the close of the show. Sales The Athenaeum Gallery will retain a 20% commission on works sold, the Womens' Caucus for Art will be given a 20% commission on works sold, and the gallery will issue a check for 60% of the sales price to the artist no longer than thirty days after the show has closed. Sold work remains in the gallery until the last day of the show. Work does not have to be for sale to be included in the show. Insurance All works in the show will be insured by the Athenaeum Gallery for 100% of the retail price from January 31 - March 13, 2016.

My challenge to myself was to create movement out of shards of pottery.  I cleared the shelves of plates and bowls and threw in a chicken and a pig for good measure. Come see the results! Also are some legs at play, red glass that catches the light at sunrise and sunset, swirls of color, ladies at lunch and a little discreet intimacy goin' on.  
 
Saturday, November 14, 1-4pm: I'm teaching a free class on glass-on-glass suncatchers. Come make one to take home.

WCA/DC chapter member Ann Stoddard invites people to stop by the Smith Center’s Joan Hisaoka Gallery (1632 U St NW/ DC) at 3:30 pm Saturday, October 17 for the Implicit Bias Exhibition Artist’s Talk and Reception. She has two video pieces in this show.  “Jumping Jack (two minute workout)” is displayed in the window (still image below) and can be viewed 24 hours a day.  The Implicit Bias Exhibition will be on view until December 5 (11-5 Wed- Fri., Sat. 11-3, www.Smithcenter.org).

Washington ArtWorks is calling for small works of art for the December exhibition, 

A Foot in the Door, to be juried by Washington ArtWorks CEO, Missy Loewe. Works must be under 12"x12" and not exceed $500 for this holiday time show. This exhibition has historically been the best selling one of the year for Washington ArtWorks.

CALL DESCRIPTION

THE BARN marks the third of four calls for LAND&ART@MARC: A 4 SEASON PROJECT, a collaboration between MARC and WSG to develop and realize land art and land use projects through the four seasons of the year, with the primary focus on farming and agricultural issues. The collaboration seeks to generate a diverse and multilayered program throughout the year that examines farming, agricultural themes in today's societal landscape, and environmental issues through collaborative and participatory creative projects with visitors, volunteers, members, and communities.

 

We are proud to announce a call for entry for an indoor group exhibition to take place in the horse barn at the Baltimore County Agricultural Center's property that will be transformed into a micro-gallery and art laboratory during the time of the winter season. We are seeking artist teams to collaborate on diverse ideas that incorporate interdisciplinary objectives and relate to the concept of the barn itself. Artist teams are welcome to create installations, sculptures, paintings, or multimedia visuals exploring the theme of the barn with regard to structure, architecture, anthropology (domestication), history, storytelling agriculture, and other disciplines.

 

THE BARN project provides a horse barn with eight single stalls and an open area in the center. Artist teams will be allowed one stall per team in which to install artwork. A list of links is included below to help applicants investigate interdisciplinary concepts relating to this project.

 

ABOUT THE SITE

This 149-acre Piedmont farm located in central Baltimore County was once part of a larger 400-acre grain and horse farm dating from the 1700s. Its main homestead was built in the 1800s. While most of the homestead is gone today, the land remains agriculturally preserved as a living outdoor classroom designed to allow the public unfettered access to the many different aspects of agriculture, and provide farmers the opportunity to see innovative practices in a real-world setting.

Get energized, get moving, Artomatic 2015 is happening!  It will run from October 30th - December 12th at 8100 Corporate Drive, Hyattsville MD right by the New Carrollton Metro Station.  We are truly excited! 

Anyone can participate in Artomatic - there are no criteria to register, and space is allocated on a first come, first served basis. Artomatic routinely attracts more than 70,000 visitors to see work by more than 700 artists, and more than 300 performances. Our presenting partner the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC) Department of Parks and Recreation is hosting Artomatic in a 90,000 sq ft building in Prince George's County.

WASHINGTON—The National Museum of Women in the Arts (NMWA) presents Pathmakers: Women in Art, Craft, and Design, Midcentury and Today, an exhibition that explores the lasting impact of women artists and designers on midcentury Modernism. On view Oct. 30, 2015–Feb. 28, 2016, the exhibition presents more than 80 objects including furniture, ceramics, textiles and jewelry. Reflecting the continuing popularity of midcentury design today, the exhibition also includes a selection of contemporary work that builds upon the accomplishments of an earlier generation.

FRESH TALK- On the state of women in the arts and why it matters

Artists, curators, and representatives from auction houses, commercial galleries, and media invite us to participate in a no-holds-barred conversation. A movement builder, storyteller, and feminist activist tops off the day with her thoughts on how Beyoncé, Taylor Swift, Emma Watson, and others are inspiring new audiences to raise their voices for feminism and gender justice.
