CALL FOR ART:

Artists are invited to submit works around themes of social, cultural, economic, human rights, women’s rights, political and social justice activism that combine visual art with music in order to tell a compelling story and, by doing so, affirm the many bonds between sight and sound. Artists are asked to choose a song to which to pair their art – a song that is directly linked to the theme of the work, a song that inspired the work or that was played as part of the artistic process.  Selected works will be displayed next to  QR codes, which will take viewers to iTunes, YouTube,Vimeo or other link, where the paired music may be heard.

While all media is accepted and there are no size restrictions, we encourage the submission of smaller works, due to the size of the gallery. Works will be chosen for the gallery with additional works chosen for the online gallery and catalog and shown in a looped slide show in the Nave Annex Gallery.

About the Jurors:
Susan Berstler is a visual artist and arts producer. Her main interest is in transformative media, especially in the realm of public art. She is the founder and director of the Nave galleries, two nonprofit art spaces in her hometown of Somerville, MA.

Mary Curtin (www.marycurtinproductions.com) has had a long-standing commitment to promoting and producing artistic endeavors that best affect positive change within the community where she lives. Her business motto 'dedicated to staging insightful entertainment, particularly in non-traditional venues'. speaks to her enthusiasm in supporting local grass roots cultural activism, which can often cause a ripple effect in raising social awareness beyond the borders of her home town, currently Boston and vicinity.

Cecily Miller (www.cecilymiller.com) is an independent arts consultant with a specialty in cultural programs and a personal mission to develop arts programming which strengthens
a sense of community, provides new insight or understanding of issues, offers opportunities for self-expression, and creates experiences of hope and joy. Cecily has been a fan of the Honk Festival since it's founding; although she has volunteered every year, she has yet to fulfill her longstanding dream to run away and join a Honk Band.

Eligibility: International Call, open to all artists.

About the Gallery:  Since 2004 the Nave Gallery in Teele Square has been the public face of ARTSomerville, a nonprofit, loosely knit volunteer group of artists and arts enthusiasts with the mutual goal to create new space(s) to present art in Somerville. In 2013 they added a second exhibition space, the Nave Annex in Davis Square. In addition, they have created a number of public music, dance and art events including Project MUM (a dance party under McGrath Highway), 2012s Yarnstorm Perry Park (part of their ongoing Wrap Around Project), and SqueezeBox Slam, an outdoor festival dedicated to accordion and concertina music.

The Nave Gallery and the Nave Annex provide space for the collaboration and presentation of art of all media. Work of a collaborative, non-commercial nature is especially encouraged.

ABOUT HONK!
A full day of activist band performances in Davis Square, just north of the Nave Gallery Annex (Saturday, October 10th) and a parade of bands from Davis Square to Harvard Square (Sunday, October 11th) . . . 'live performances and street actions in support of social justice issues, ranging from increasing the minimum wage to immigration reform. Simply put, if Occupy! had a marching band, the HONK! Festival would be it. Honk for Social Change, Bill Lichtenstein, Huffington Post article. http://honkfest.org/about/,

Collaboration:
GutfreundCornettArt has been invited by the Nave Gallery in Somerville, Massachusetts to present an exhibition in concert with Honk! Festival of Activist Street Bands (http://honkfest.org) – a multi-day, international festival in support of social justice issues and occurring in and around Cambridge, Massachusetts. The Nave Gallery Annex will be hosting an exhibit of information about the bands and expects large audiences coming through during the festival. Visaural: Sight, Sound and Action will combine this activist music with activist-themed art. GutfreundCornettArt specializes in creating exhibition opportunities for artists on themes of art as activism to stimulate dialog, raise consciousness and create social change and provide unique opportunities for artists, communities and our relevant non-profit collaborators to come together around social and environmental themes.

This exhibition will benefit the Boston City Singers, http://www.bostoncitysingers.org, and the Nave Galleries and will receive a donation from GutfreundCornettArt for this project. The mission of the Boston City Singers is to provide the highest level of musical training and wide ranging performance opportunities to young people ages 4-18; their vision is to transform the lives of inner city young people one voice at a time, inspiring and developing each heart to live with compassion in a world of differences. Represent: 200 Years of African American Art
Philadelphia Museum of Art

January 10, 2015 - April 5, 2015

Explore the creative achievements of African American artists and examine the expression of personal and collective identities in a nation marked by a history of racial inequality.

Represent: 200 Years of African American Art highlights selections from the Museum’s exceptional holdings of African American art and celebrates the publication of a catalogue examining the breadth of these noteworthy collections. With work by renowned artists such as Henry Ossawa Tanner, Horace Pippin, Jacob Lawrence, and Carrie Mae Weems, the exhibition showcases a range of subjects, styles, mediums, and traditions. Since the Museum’s acquisition of Tanner’s painting The Annunciation in 1899, its collections of African American art have grown significantly, especially during the last three decades.

From compelling stories to innovative methods, Represent explores the evolving ways in which African American artists have expressed personal, political, and racial identity. It begins with rare examples of fine and decorative arts made in the 1800s by free and enslaved individuals such as a large storage jar by the accomplished potter David Drake. As access to artistic training and opportunities increased, the relationship between creative expression and identity grew more complex and nuanced. In the early twentieth century, artists like William Henry Johnson and Elizabeth Catlett embraced modernism by representing personal experiences or scenes of daily life in vibrant colors and dynamic compositions.

In the exhibition, abstract paintings and sculpture from the 1960s through the 1980s by Barbara Chase-Riboud, Martin Puryear, and others show a desire to balance cultural and artistic identities, challenging the idea that work by African Americans should be viewed in primarily racial terms. By contrast, many artists working in the 1990s and since, Glenn Ligon and Lorna Simpson among them, have used pictures and text to examine the past and make pointed statements about race. Represent culminates with a wide-ranging array of portraits created by several generations of artists, from those active over a century ago to those making work today, as well as audio excerpts of interviews with contemporary artists Moe Brooker, Barkley L. Hendricks, Odili Donald Odita, Joyce J. Scott, and others.
