FRESH TALK- On the state of women in the arts and why it matters

Artists, curators, and representatives from auction houses, commercial galleries, and media invite us to participate in a no-holds-barred conversation. A movement builder, storyteller, and feminist activist tops off the day with her thoughts on how Beyoncé, Taylor Swift, Emma Watson, and others are inspiring new audiences to raise their voices for feminism and gender justice.

Join us for food, drink, and discussion at Sunday Supper after the program.

WASHINGTON PROJECT FOR THE ARTS

Washington Project for the Arts, in partnership with Smithsonian Enterprises, is pleased to announce it will be sponsoring a two-day holiday pop up shop at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden during the Smithsonian Holiday Festival on Saturday, December 5 and Sunday, December 6, 2015. The shop will feature unique and exciting holiday gifts, including small works of art, crafts, and other handmade goods by WPA member artists.  
  
WPA member artists interested in participating are invited to submit proposals including original, handcrafted items or artwork they would like to sell in the store.  A broad range of work is sought and items with modest, gift-friendly price tags (under $300) are desired. 

Examples of what may be considered include, but are NOT limited to: jewelry, seasonal items (ornaments, gifts, toys), personalized items, housewares, glass decorative items, ceramics, handmade books/cards/stationery, clothing, pet items, photography, digital, video and 2D artwork. Works that more esoteric, conceptual in nature, or that incorporate technology are also  highly encouraged.

The 29th Annual Young At Art (YAA) show announces a call to artists for a juried art exhibition, August 24, 2015 – November 20, 2015 at the Durant Arts Center located at 1605 Cameron Street, Alexandria, VA. 

Co-sponsored by Goodwin House Foundation (GHF) and Senior Services of Alexandria (SSA) and this juried art show is specifically for artists 55 years of age or older.

The juror will be Chris Haggerty, Fine Arts Professor at Marymount University.  Cash prizes will be awarded to the top 3 places, plus 5 honorable mentions.

The “take in” of art is on Thursday, August 20, 2015 from 10:00 AM until 12:00 Noon at the Durant Arts Center.

In the upcoming election year, what does democracy mean in the United States? It's time for artists to get on their soapboxes – whether it is a conceptual soapbox (Warhol) or direct Statement Art (Jenny Holtzer) and tell us what you think about democracy in America. 

What did our forefathers intend in the Constitution with the freedom of speech, the right to bear arms, the pursuit of happiness, etc. To whom do these tenets apply in a racially, religious and politically divided country? 

GCA is asking artists to share their voices in this art-based conversation about democracy and seeks art that address and interprets these broadly.

SUBMISSION AND MEDIA:
Artists may submit up to three works per entry with a total of three separate entries. Multiple views per piece are accepted when uploading images of 3D work. All media is accepted except giclees of original work. The use of giclees, if part of a larger work/collage or assemblage is acceptable. The artist will be responsible for any special equipment beyond pedestals (video monitors, etc.)
 
NON-REFUNDABLE ENTRY FEE: Payment of $40 per entry; non-refundable fee per entry after deadline date. The entry fee for full-time students is $15 per entry. One entry can include up to three pieces of art. Payments are made through PayPal.
 
SALES OF ART: A 60% commission will go to the artist, a 40% will go the gallery. All works sold must remain in the gallery for the duration of the exhibition.
 
DELIVERY OF ARTWORK: Detailed delivery instructions will be provided to artists accepted into the show. Artists are responsible for the costs of shipment of their work to/from the gallery and insuring their work during travel.

Do you hear what I hear? is a question posed by one person to another. Behind Do you hear what I hear? is a request — hope — for a connection between individuals responding to their environment. Work in all media will be accepted, or listened to, even as listening is directly alluded to in the title. How do you listen? It depends on who you are. Current affairs routinely offer tragic examples of the many-sided responses to actions and events in the world at large. Recent books such as Rebecca Solnit’s Men Explain Things to Me and Claudia Rankine’s Citizen: An American Lyric, directly speak to race and gender in the American social sphere, and elucidate how both race and gender too often render many citizens unheard, unseen, and unattended to.

Respecting the varied ways races, genders, sexualities and classes interpret the world around us, let’s learn to listen to the stories, histories, and traditions of many. This is an open appeal, to ask, “Do you hear what I hear?” to fight the dismissals and silences, because something is happening, even if you aren’t always sure what it is.

Earlier this years as part of an exhibit at Pyramid Atlantic Art Center, a prestigious gallery and art center in Silver Spring, MD, I exhibited four pieces.   I am proud to announce that three are now in a private collection. 

The fourth piece, "Mother Nature" (bottom left)  is now in the 103rd Members Medal show at the Plastic Club, the 3rd oldest art club in the United States and the only one founded by women artists, located at 247 S.
