ART INTERNATIONAL

Beautiful tribute to Nelson Mandela
Fifty rods of steel, symbolizing prison bars, so people will never forget the years Mandela was imprisoned …

The remarkable thing about this artwork is that it is only when you stand at a certain distance (which is marked) that you see ….

The Nelson Mandela Sculpture in Howick KwaZulu-Natal South Africa. The artist of the sculpture is Marco Cianfanelli. The sculpture is made up of 50 poles that symbolize the 50th Anniversary of his arrest in Howick KwaZulu-Natal. The poles range in height from 5 meters to 10 meters. When one walks through the poles, the practical pattern gives the effect of a gunshot which symbolizes the political uprising of the ANC . The Length of the sculpture is 20 meters. The front of the sculpture is a portrait of Mandela, it has vertical bars which represents his imprisonment. The portrait of Mandela can only be viewed at 35 meters from the front of the sculpture when all the poles line up. This gives a nod to the fact that Mandela was so hard to capture. Mandela was dubbed "the black pimpernel". Go here to see how it was built: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sw66Gd_SXx0

WCADC Community Arts News

From C Farrell Johnson Fine Arts, LLC, Newsletter

Hope I'll Join the Band
In 2013, the Montgomery County Arts & Humanities Council awarded Cynthia Farrell Johnson an individual artist grant to create a body of work.  It will allow her to produce paintings and prints inspired by 10 different jazz musicians.  The idea for the proposal was sparked by her 2010 project that interpreted a number of spirituals her late father sang.  One of them, Hope I'll Join the Band, got her thinking about ways to honor jazz artists who had influenced or inspired her at various stages of her life. This year, as the project unfolds, Cynthia will provide updates. Visit www.cfjfinearts.com for your distinctive fine art reproductions for all occasions.
