From our member artist, HIRO:

I've been working on my art programs and booklets. Several of them are now part of the Asian Collection of the Library of Congress, and forthcoming -- I am to be interviewed by staff and students of the Univ. of Maryland. I'm continuing to develop additional art booklets, combining the "word" with my "art."

This past year I was in Seattle to unveil my painting of a pioneer Japanese American woman who celebrated her 100th birthday. This diptych painting is now in the collection of the Bainbridge Island Japanese American Exclusion Memorial and the forthcoming Museum. Also, for the U.S. Navy Medical facility at Corpus Christi, Texas, I presented a slide/lecture of my artworks and did a hands-on Creative Expression Workshop Through Painting followed by a discussion with the medical staff participants. It was most fulfilling.

Washington Project for the Arts announces an open call for video-based artworks to be screened at The Phillips Collection and at Artisphere, in April and May of 2012. From the videos selected for the screening, one work will be awarded the 2012 Kraft Prize for New Media, a cash prize of $750.

The video series is part of Experimental Media 2012, a broader WPA program that also includes an exhibition at Artisphere and a series of free public workshops. The exhibition, screening series, and surrounding programming will explore recent developments in the field of art and technology, including the growth of open source software and hardware, the emergence of grassroots do-it-yourself hacker communities, and the increasing ubiquity of networked devices in daily life. While highlighting the creative potential of this new technology, Experimental Media 2012also seeks projects that explore the broader social and cultural implications of these rapid changes.

Within the broader context of developments in art and technology, this call seeks video work addressing the ever-increasing flood of information and data in contemporary life and the tendency to make connections and exchange information across disparate fields of thought. These may include but aren't limited to exchanges and connections that are physical, transmitted, informational, emotional, cognitive, social, political, economic, cultural, chemical, molecular, electric, fluid, sonic, quantum, virtual, or identity-based.

While the Experimental Media Exhibition will feature interactive works that employ technology, artificial, and natural systems to build experiences through manipulating the flow of information, the Experimental Media Video Screening will include works that use video as a medium to similarly explore characteristics of this new landscape of data flow, perception, and exchange between systems, whether human, gestural, cultural, chemical, political, or virtual.

About the Jurors
Max Kazemzadeh is an electronic and emergent media artist engineer and Assistant Professor of Media Art & Technology at Gallaudet University in Washington, DC. His work focuses on how constructed, semi-conscious interfaces influence human interaction. In addition to widely exhibiting his own work, he has experience organizing and curating festivals and exhibitions. Kazemzadeh organized the conference Texelectronica '06 (Dallas), served as the chair of the electronic media art session at the 2008 College Art Association Conference, served as a juror for SIGGRAPH 2007, and has given annual interactive hardware/software workshops at the Central Academy of Fine Art in Beijing since 2004.

His work has been exhibited internationally in such venues as the Microwave Festival (Hong Kong), the Boston CyberArts Festival, Mediala-Prado's Interactivos 08 (Mexico City), Dashanzi International Art Festival (Beijing), IDMA IDEA's Exhibition/Symposium (Ohio), Fotofest (Houston), Macedonia Museum of Contemporary Art (Greece), Maker Faire (Austin), LA Center for Digital Art (Los Angeles), The Gerald Peters Gallery (New York), and the Dallas Contemporary. Kazemzadeh is currently a Ph.D candidate at the Planetary Collegium, University of Plymouth (United Kingdom). He holds an MFA in Design and Technology from Parsons School of Design and a BFA in Drawing and Painting from the University of North Texas.

Dr. Jonah Brucker-Cohen is a researcher, artist, and writer based in New York, NY. He received his Ph.D. in the Disruptive Design Team of the Networking and Telecommunications Research Group (NTRG), Trinity College Dublin (Ireland). He is currently an adjunct assistant professor at Parsons MFA in Design & Technology and Parsons School of Art, Design, History, and Theory (ADHT). From 2001-2004 he was a Research Fellow in the Human Connectedness Group at Media Lab Europe and from 2006-2007 he was an R&D OpenLab Fellow at Eyebeam Center for Art and Technology in New York City.

His work and thesis focuses on the theme of "Deconstructing Networks" which includes over 77 projects that attempt to critically challenge and subvert accepted perceptions of network interaction and experience. He is co-founder of the Dublin Art and Technology Association (DATA Group), recipient of the ARANEUM Prize sponsored by the Spanish Ministry of Art, Science and Technology and Fundacion ARCO, and was a 2006 and 2008 Rockefeller Foundation New Media Fellow Nominee. His writing has appeared in numerous international publications including WIRED, Make, Neural, Rhizome.org, Art Asia Pacific, Gizmodo and more, and his work has been presented at events and organizations such as Transmediale, Institute of Contemporary Art in London, Tate Modern, Whitney Museum of American Art's ArtPort, Ars Electronica, Chelsea Art Museum, ZKM Museum of Contemporary Art, Museum of Modern Art (New York), San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and Palais Du Tokyo.

Thisis a game that will send a little red journal on an expedition across thechapters to celebrate WCA’s 40th anniversary. Chapter-and at-large members havethe opportunity to embellish the Moleskine journal pages with art and sharetheir inspirations with a wide network of WCA members across the country. InJanuary 2013, the book will travel back to its original location and be put upfor auction during the WCA Conference in New York. One lucky bidder will own afabulous collection of art created by WCA members all across the country!

· WCADC will fill the July month of the journal with art. That means we will have 31 pages

EXHIBITION THEME:
The discovery of oil, in 1859, in Pennsylvania, transformed our way of life; we are enveloped by petroleum products - from the shoes we wear, to the materials our clothes are made of, to the way we heat our houses, to our modes of transportation. Oil dependency pollutes the environment causing respiratory illness, endangers wildlife, and necessitates the large scale loss of life as we search to secure sources of oil overseas. How do we initiate change with this rush to grab dwindling non-renewable energy assets, instead of focusing on renewable energy and the prevention of global warming?

Our founding fathers could not have envisioned that our two-party system, with built-in checks and balances, would fail to safeguard against the tyranny of big oil companies. The failure of our elected officials to implement an effective energy policy leaves the American people in a vulnerable position. A petroleum based economy subjects our citizens to resource-based wars that jeopardizes our children and holds our standard of living perilously tied to the price of a barrel of oil.

The self-interest of the American people is not paralleled by the self-interest of energy companies that seek to maximize profits at the expense of innovation and development. This exhibit seeks to raise awareness of our imperiled democracy and the Petroleum Paradox. ABOUT THE JUROR
Eleanor Heartney, is a Contributing Editor to Art in America and Artpress and has written extensively on contemporary art issues for such other publications as Artnews, Art and Auction, The New Art Examiner, the Washington Post and The New York Times. She received the College Art Association's Frank Jewett Mather Award for distinction in art criticism in 1992. Her books include: Critical Condition: American Culture at the Crossroads (Cambridge University Press, 1997); Postmodernism (Cambridge University Press, 2001); Postmodern Heretics: The Catholic Imagination in Contemporary Art (Midmarch Arts Press, 2004); Defending Complexity: Art, Politics and the New World Order (Hard Press Editions, 2006) and Art and Today (Phaidon Press Inc., 2008), a survey of contemporary art of the last 25 years from Phaidon. She is a co-author of After the Revolution: Women who Transformed Contemporary Art (Prestel Publishing, 2007), which won the Susan Koppelman Award. Heartney is a past President of AICA-USA, the American section of the International Art Critics Association. In 2008 she was honored by the French government as a Chevalier dans l?Ordre des Arts et des Lettres.

ABOUT THE GALLERY:
Denise Bibro began exhibiting the work of a diverse group of contemporary artists in corporate and alternative spaces in 1980. After showcasing work at her art salon in Union Square, 1992 saw the opening of her first gallery in SoHo. Denise Bibro Fine Art moved to its current Chelsea location in 1997, and encompasses the main gallery as well as a project space, Platform, providing over 4,000 square feet of exhibition space. Presenting and promoting both emerging and established artists, the gallery has an emphasis on painting, works on paper, sculpture, and multi-media works. The programming for Platform explores more conceptual work, including video and installation works, as well as presenting collaborative projects with other curators and dealers. Ms. Bibro also provides comprehensive advisory services for both artists and collectors. I am fascinatedby dreams, fairy tales, mythology and mystical thought.

With my work, Iexplore the visions I receive through dreams, the subconscious, and intuition.I like to put found objects together to see what happens.

I make work inboth 2-and 3-dimensions. I compose, construct, juxtapose and paint. In myquest, I capture images using photographs (my own and others), drawing andpainting. I use varying scale systems and points of view, employingimage-as-text and text-as-image.

I let theseobjects, composed of found and fabricated elements, create their own meaningsand resonance.

Fumiko Nishinaka Hayashida

To honor Fumiko Nishinaka Hayashida for service to community and country, HIRO unveiled her portrait painting at Fumiko's 100th Birthday Celebration on January 22, 2011.

The painting is in the collection of the Bainbridge Island Japanese American Exclusion Memorial located at the original site of the historic Eagledale Ferry Dock across Puget Sound from Seattle. This was the place where Fumiko Hayashida, together with the other residents of Japanese ancestry, were forced out of their homes on March 30, 1942, by the United States military, shipped off to the desolate Manzanar War Relocation Camp in the middle of nowhere of Owens Valley,California, and incarcerated for the duration of World War II. This happened in accordance with President Roosevelt's Executive Order 9066, issued February 10, 1942, without due process of law of the Constitution. No matter whether they were Americans citizens or not, and most were born in Bainbridge Island.

Caught in a photograph by the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, the mother and child became an instant iconic figure personifying the plight of the Japanese American “internment”. The mother, with that subtle look of mixed apprehension and will to endure, “gaman,” captured my attention, for I too am a Japanese American.

Who is this woman with the child? I did not know her name. I did know that she was from the Seattle area. My first sighting of this well-known photograph when this photograph was displayed in the same exhibition that my two paintings were being shown, “A MORE PERFECT UNION: Japanese Americans and the United States Constitution," at the Smithsonian American History Museum, Washington, D.C. The titles of my paintings are, “SADA MEMORIES: Thinking of Justice,” and “Justice For All,” and may be seen on a link of this website. At that time I did not follow-up, and her identity remained unknown.

However, another opportunity developed when I .was working on the exhibit for SITES, Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service, “STRENGTH AND DIVERSITY: Japanese American Women, 1890-1990.” My painting, “Kimono and Barbed Wire,” was included in this three-year national museum tour. But this time I was determined to investigate the mother and child photograph. Is this woman still alive? Where is she? What about the daughter? I did a nationwide search via telephone and found Dr. Frank Kitamoto, a prominent dentist living in Bainbridge Island. When I inquired about the mother, he exclaimed, “She's my aunt!” After asking him for a formal introduction, I followed-up with many telephone interviews. The mother in the photograph is Fumiko Nishinaka Hayashida, living in Seattle; her daughter is Kayo Natalie Hayashida Ong, living with her husband Albert Ong in El Lago, Houston, Texas. I found Fumiko Hayashida happy to be of help, friendly, very communicative with a sense of humor, an optimist looking forward to the future, a wonderful personality.

“Fumi,” as her friends call her, was born on January 21, 1911, at Bainbridge Island, Washington, graduated high school on the island and worked on the Nishinaka family farm. She married another strawberry farmer, Saburo Hayashida, and started a family when World War II began. She and her family were among the first group of 227 evacuees being transported off the Island to prison at Manzanar when that now famous mother and child photograph was taken.

Through SITES, I invited Fumiko to participate as a guest in the various events of the exhibition, wrote her biography, and presented her to the museum directors who were exhibiting this show. She was a favorite with the press, a natural. The first venue was at the High Desert Museum in Bend, Oregon, in 1993, followed by eight more museum venues throughout the United States, including the Burke Museum of Natural History and Culture, Seattle, Washington.

By keeping in touch with Fumi from that time on, we have become very close friends. Through the many years of knowing her I had thought of painting a portrait of her to depict the experiences she had in her lifetime. The inspiration for the painting came exactly in the year 2006, when she came to Washington, D.C., on September 28, at the age of 95 years, to testify on behalf of the legislation for the Bill, H.R. 5817, The Bainbridge Island Japanese American Monument Act of 2006. Fumiko Hayashida she gave her testimony at the Hearing before the Committee on Resources, Sub-committee on National Parks, United States House of Representatives.This legislation enabled the U.S. Park Service to declare this memorial a National Historic Site and part of the Park Service. She gave thanks to Congressmen Jay Inslee for introducing the original bill and to Congressman Mike Simpson for co-sponsorship. After the hearing she conducted a memorable press conference under the auspices of Congressman Inslee at his office on Capitol Hill. Through the years Fumiko became the spokesperson for the Japanese American experience and the cause for justice and civil rights.

After 69 years the Bainbridge Island Japanese American Exclusion Memorial was finally dedicated on Saturday, August 6, 2011. The monument and the forthcoming interpretive center was constructed on the original site of the Eagledale Ferry Landing where the first group of Japanese Americans were forcibly evacuated. A total of ten internment camps were constructed in remote areas from California to Arkansas housing approximately 120,000 evacuees in crowded barracks. The advantage of this urban location is that it is the only site that is easily accessible to the public to serve the purpose of the memorial, “Nidoto Nai Yoni — Let It Not Happen Again.” This message, together with 277 names of the island evacuees, is engraved on the long cedar wall bordering the memorial grounds. Present at the ceremony were Fumiko Hayashida, her daughter Kayo Natalie with her husband Albert Ong, Fumiko's son Neal, the extended members of the Hayashida family, Frank Kitamoto and family, relatives and friends, members of the Bainbridge Island Japanese American Memorial organization, and supporters of the memorial project.

Fumiko Hayashida is the oldest internment camp survivor from Bainbridge. Forever the optimist, Fumiko says she carries on one day at a time, looks to the future with a smile.

Mini Solos Exhibit

at Touchstone Gallery in Washington, D.C. was a wonderful exhibit that featured WCADC Artist Lynne Grossman. Her work was beautifully displayed an stood out amongst more overwhelming pieces nearby. Her textured landscapes captured serenity and vitality, drawing the viewer closer. The depth of her pieces closed the gap between reality and imagination. The exhibit was nicely put together, featuring paintings, drawings, photography, and collage. Most of the artwork displayed were done by women artists, such as Tina Learned a mixed media artist whose work has a "world beat" feel to it, used alot of repetitive imagery such as circles and organic shapes to create her paintings. The layering of imagery and color really made her work pop and grab your attention. The works of Nancy Abeles has a pop art feel to it. Encompasing repetitive imagery to bring the work full circle. Her sue of the female form as the focus, draws the eye in to take a look at the interesting dialogue created between the images within her work. Deborah Saks, collages are images that reflect moments of whimsy, girly fun, and gives a different view of a womens perspective in collage form. Pictures from the exhibit below.

This was an exicting exhibit that was well attended. The exhibit ran from August 4-27, 2011. The Touchstone Gallery is located at 901 New York Ave., Washington,D.C.

Living innature and my reflections of it have created the direction of my work. The BlueRidge Mountains are powerful in color as light washes over them. The ancienthistory of the earth and the natural forces that created the Blue Ridge are evidentand I think of landscape painting as a connection.

Watercolor,I find, is a medium expressive of nature—in its luminous and fluid character; encaustichas similar qualities, since heated wax has alchemy of its own that influences thepainting process. I rely very muchon drawing as the beginning and most direct notes for painting. For this reason, pastel with it’sintensity of pigment and versatility as a medium is often my most immediatereference.

Havinglived in cities much of my life, I had no idea of the impact that actuallyliving in a rural setting would have on my work --when I moved to the NorthernVirginia countryside in 1978. I often paint the same locations over andover, yet there is always something new in color and how light defines themoment.

This was an exhibition of art inspired by the Negro Spirituals my father sang.

I believe that our world is full of beauty and that there are countless individuals committing random acts of kindness every day. My goal as an artist is to record the beauty as I see it and in the process, I hope that it will bring some joy into the viewer's life.

The Artist

HIRO is a visual and performance artist who combines her American experience with her Japanese cultural heritage to create artworks based on East-West cross-cultural themes. Her paintings concern many issues that impacted her life: identity and the community, cultural diversity, civil rights/justice and politics, cities, environment and technology, figure-in-motion and kinetics, self identity and community. In addition she has developed painting series with titles such as Portrait Biography, East-West Dialogue, Life Cycle, Constellation and Calligraphic Imagery. Using expressionistic brushstroke methodology, HIRO demonstrates and conducts hands-on Creativity Painting Workshops and gives PowerPoint programs on her art and related topics including: diversity, identity, civil right/justice issues, the workplace, goals in education and occupations, and other issues.

The most personal and heartfelt of HIRO's art are two major acrylic on silk paintings, “SADA MEMORIES: Thoughts on Justice” and “Justice For All.” Both paintings were in the Smithsonian Exhibition, “A More Perfect Union: Japanese Americans and the United States Constitution” at the National Museum of American History, 1987-2005, Washington, D.C. These works are a part of the 35-painting series entitled, “KIMONO AND BARBED WIRE: Breaking Barriers,” which have been exhibited nationally and internationally.

From her childhood fascination with the lights of the cities, HIRO's earliest crayon drawings featured the glitter of buildings, cars, and street lights depicted in broad brushstrokes of colors. Her “City Lights” series of artworks grew from this inspiration. In New York, HIRO began working on a series of Manhattan skyline paintings, then added other cities she had lived in or traveled to across the United States and overseas: Washington, D.C., Chicago, New Orleans, Los Angeles, Tokyo, London, et al. The crowning joy came years later upon having been invited to the press opening topping-off ceremony of the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center upon the completion of the elevator shaft to the rooftop. What a glorious sight to view the vast expanse of New York Bay from cloud level. From Soho she first noticed two towers rising up beyond the skyline during the construction period (1966–1973). Amazed at the sight, she quickly researched the World Trade Center project to discover that the architect was Minoru Yamasaki.

All of HIRO's New York series of artworks were painted before “9/11” except for one — which was finally completed after the terrorist attack. In the triptych painting “Before and After 9/11/2001,” she has an “ARROW” pointing up (third panel), to represent the construction of a “NEW” World Trade Center. These Manhattan paintings are in tribute to the beauty of the New York skyline before 9/11/2001, but also to mark the beginning of the “NEW.”

The ThickArt Collaborative with Authentic Contemporary Art and The Center For Green Urbanism Presents “Making HerStory 6”, the Annual Celebration of Women in the Arts--a month full of various unifying events celebrating women artists in all genres. The celebration will take place at The Center for Green Urbanism, in Washington, DC’s Ward 7, March 1-31, 2011.

Making HerStory celebrates the vast and diverse forms of creativity offered by women artists. With this being the sixth year of Making HerStory, the creators have found a renewed energy among many of the artists in the Making HerStory family. This year’s theme is The Era of Our Dreams, exemplifying a new energy arising from the ashes of the last decade’s struggles, into a new era. Marilyn Banner, Deep Woods

Marilyn Banner is an artist and arts educator with more than 25 years experience in each discipline. Her educational background includes a BFA in painting from Washington University in St. Louis, graduate work at Queens College, State College at Buffalo, and University of Maryland, and an MSEd from Massachusetts College of Art in Boston. She has taught art in the Washington DC area at Maret School, Green Acres School, Maryland College of Art and Design, and in Montgomery County Alternative Programs, as well as privately.

Ms. Banner's exhibition record includes local, national, and international shows. Recent shows were at NOVA Loudoun, VA, The Ratner Museum, Bethesda MD, Ceres Gallery, NYC, Shepherd College, Shepherdstown, WV, and Artspace in Richmond, VA. She is an eight-time recipient of fellowship residencies at the Virginia Center for Creative Arts, and was included in Who's Who in American Women in 1999. She has lectured on her work at numerous institutions including Maryland Institute College of Art, Maryland College of Art and Design, National Institutes of Health, Shepherd College, and the National Museum of Women in the Arts. Her work is in several public and over 100 private collections. (YouTube videos of two recent shows:2008; 2007)

In addition to teaching and exhibiting art, Ms. Banner has been active as an arts activist and organizer. She is co-founder and co-director of Washington Musica Viva, a popular new music, poetry, and visual arts performance series which began in her Kensington, MD studio and is now city-wide. Since 1987 she has led support/ empowerment groups for women in the arts in the DC area, and was regional coordinator of No Limits for Women in the Arts, a national organization, for five years. She has served on the DC board of the Women's Caucus for Art, and co-organized the national WCA Conference in 1991. She has curated WCA shows and led a panel at the WCA national conference in Seattle in 1993. The DC Area Women's Caucus chapter recently honored Ms. Banner with presentation of the Corinne Mitchell Award for service to women in the arts in the Washington DC metropolitan area.

Cherie M. Redlinger’s artistic career spans over three decades and two continents so it's no surprise that her visual art and art history education was in Europe and the United States. Her visual art education includes a lifetime of drawing, oil paintings, printmaking, and constructions and in 1987 she obtained her B.A. in Art History, University of Maryland, European Division and in 1991 her M.A. of Art, in Printmaking, CSU at Northridge, CA.

Cherie has drawn from life's abstractions to create her art. She is involved in a new series of two-dimensional mixed-media on which she compiles her journeys with mind and nature. Filled with mystic, symbolic, cosmic expressive feelings she brings out the beauty of nature that surrounds her and to capture her mind’s essence. Cherie captured the hearts of clients and collectors throughout the United States and Europe and has artwork placed in the permanent collections of Hill Country Arts Foundation, Ingram Texas; Turchin Center for the Visual Arts, Appalachian State University, Boone, NC; ArtColle Museum & Gallery, Sergines, France; International Museo de Collage, Mexico; Contemporary Museum, MD; and The National Museum of Women in the Arts, Washington, DC.

Cherie has been an Artist, and Educator. Cherie is committed to creating her own art while also participating as a long time member of the WCA. She has supported the Women’s Caucus of Art in every state she has lived in starting with the D.C. chapter, where she was the President. She is responsible for founding the Georgia Chapter, one of the most active chapter in the WCA National organization. In addition, she has felt it necessary to be involved with other art associations, which have served to cross-network and bolster the women’s art movement. With enthusiasm she developed and taught visual art and art history classes for after-school programs, fine art camps, adult education, and college level throughout her career as an ARTIST.

The psyche of a woman is translated through my work. Seeking serenity, my figures show their strength, weakness and vulnerability as underlying characteristics. The viewer is then challenged to look beyond the surface beauty and peel back the layers of subtle gestures. My figures are robust and strong in appearance, but desire all the virtuous and delicate attributes associated with being feminine. In their solitary reverie, they mask their true emotions. Demanding a space for their persona, my pieces are complex, yet simple.

My works are sculptural narratives, each piece telling a different story. Through their lack of expression or movement, they are held in place by the weight of the burdens they carry. They can only look inward and protect their vulnerable emotions as if waiting to be awakened. Within the stone veins run through out, gently pulsing, inviting you to look closer and tap into their reverie, rolling back the layers, exploring the inner beauty that exists there.

The sensuality of the full-figured female body is explored through various twists and distortions that address the concerns of inner/outer beauty, unconditional self-love and self-acceptance.. The process of building up and tearing down then keeping the parts that work is ongoing. Like the cycle of life, the process is repeated and out of it evolves a new woman.

As my work moves forward, the solitary form will begin to peel back the layers, exposing what is truly on the inside, the surface will change. Having a better understanding of what lies underneath will push my figures outward, twisting and changing to be reborn once again.

The Women’s Caucus for Art 2011 Conference LIVE SPACE is only a month away!

The concept of LIVE SPACE is twofold: first, it describes art that is happening in the moment, and second, art that is energetic, stimulating and electric. LIVE SPACE will be happening not only all over NEW YORK CITY, but also in cities across the COUNTRY through blogging, YouTube, twitter, and live feeds. From live feeds for the Lifetime Achievement Awards and the LIVE SPACE gala, to performance art on YouTube, to live art happenings in front of the Hilton, this WCA Conference will be in the moment, exciting and electric.

Conference dates: Thursday, February 10 – Saturday, February 12

Thursday will be a jam-packed day of panels, performances, networking, and exhibitions, including the reception for JWAN’S Sanctuaries in Time exhibit and the Young WCA performance ofWhat Young Women Want.

Friday will feature the WCA International Video Shorts Festival, followed by a bus tour to the Sackler Center for Feminist Art, A.I.R. Gallery, a WCA New York members’ exhibition, and the reception for Hidden Cities, the national exhibition juried by Lisa Phillips of the New Museum.

Saturday begins with the Chapters’ Council Meeting, followed by a full day of TFAP panels, and culminates with the presentation of the Lifetime Achievement Awards at the Hilton and the LIVE SPACE GALA at the American Folk Art Museum.

Sunday includes the bus tour to Rutgers University to visit the Brodsky Center for Innovative Editions, the Institute for Women and Art, and the Jane Voorhees Zimmerli Art Museum.

Monday is the national WCA board meeting at Barnard College.

Curated by Yulia Tikhonova, a Moscow-born, New York-based curator. Panelists: K8 Hardy, a New York-based filmmaker, photographer and fashionista, founder of the queer feminist art collective LTTR, creator of the cult zine FashionFashion and, Paddy Johnson a writer who has been published in artreview.com, Art in America, FlashArt, Print Magazine, TimeOut NY, The Reeler, The Daily Beast, The Huffington Post, The Guardian, artkrush, Art & Australia, Flavorpill, NYFA Current, The New York Press, and Fanzine.

Beacons of artistic concerns, these panelists will share the observations of a wide spectrum of references which women use. Defined on one side by Sarah Palin's conservative preaching, on another side - by the sexually unbounded empowerment of Lady Gaga, what are the models that contemporary artists use and how they navigate through the "rampant multiplicities of identity." The panelist will present their assessment of challenges that women-artists face to sustain critical feminist productivity in the context when the challenging aspects of queer representation in popular culture has been erased. The panel will be held within the settings of traditional tea party parlor (complete with table linens, porcelain tea service and sweets) which will be large enough to accommodate the audience and the guest curators. Like at any meal or celebration this homogeneous environment will help to create an open comfortable dialogue where the audience doesn't feel like an audience, but where everyone is equal. Sincerity and a sense of humor are required for attendance.

- Live Performances and Films by Young Women's Caucus Members "on our own volition" - Artists: Amanda Moyer, J.R. DeMers, Susie Danielson, Stephanie Trevino, Amanda Mears, Dawn Hiltz Women have traditionally gathered to discuss their desires, their passions, changes they want in the world, and their lives. Women have congregated around watering holes, in kitchens, in bathrooms, over quilts, and at tea tables, just to name a few. Six ladies from Finlandia University will be gathering together in the Raandesk Gallery to discuss their wants and desires for their lives and the world through narrative movement and sound.

- "Spoken For"- Artists: Marina Kelly, Megan Katz Spoken For features women's intimate stories of want, using live performance and video projection in a multi-media exploration of women's desires as expressed via male voices. "Requesting Access" is collaborative photo shoot performance by Chanel Matsunami Govreau (played by Asian Barbie), photographer Martin Solheim and makeup/hair artist Tamara Qabazard. This performance layers the exaggeration of cultural costuming over questionably (un)real storytelling. This is combined with the friction and vanity of flash photography to explore multiracial identity and gender in interracial relationships as it combines with expectations of sexuality and its possible profit.

Free wild flower (photo) for you’re of love story. I have gathered images of wild, uncultivated plants. I would like to trade a photograph for a hand written love story. Simply show up write down your story and then you can pick any picture. You can keep it anonymous or you can include names, dates, times, locations. JOIN WCA and CAA for this very special day!! Tour the Brodsky Center for Innovative Editions, the Institute for Women and Art, and the Jane Voorhees Zimmerli Art Museum in collaboration with the Women’s Caucus for Art National office at Rutgers.

On view at the Zimmerli Art Museum is the major exhibition Dancing with the Dark: Joan Snyder Prints 1963–2010, the first prints retrospective by this acclaimed expressionist painter and a MacArthur ‘genius’ award recipient (2007).

Also visit the Zimmerli’s world-renowned collections of Russian and Soviet Non-Conformist Art, nineteenth-century French Art, American Art, prints, and photography.

Tour will also include a visit to the Institute for Women and Art exhibition Joan Snyder/Intimate Works, a Mary H. Dana Women Artists Series Exhibition at the Douglass Library. The Brodsky Center for Innovative Editions (BCIE) will offer a behind-the-scenes presentation by master printers and master papermakers on their collaborations with Joan Snyder and other leading artists; there will also be a private viewing of new BCIE projects, as well as a glimpse of the current Mason Gross School of the Arts MFA exhibition. The afternoon will culminate with a special lecture by Joan Snyder, followed by a reception honoring the artist. Prospectus:
Artists are invited to explore their idea of their Hidden City , real or imagined, in an array of media. The theme may be broadly interpreted from an activist, political or personal context.

No matter our place in society, we all have our Hidden City, a place of refuge from gender, race, class and sexual exclusions, a place that shapes the feminist viewpoint. Some cities, like wrapped boxes, conceal unexpected gifts, others are riddles and lyrical abstractions. These are performative spaces where we may imagine retribution for injustices, righting wrongs or conversely, delving into the dark side. Convince the viewer of its viability, a live space filled with passion and imagination!

FISH AS LIFE: PHOTOGRAPHIC SCANNER PRINTS BY MARGARET L. PARIS OPENS FRIDAY, OCT. 1 AT GALLERY 10

Keeping up with the latest photographic techniques, photographer Margaret L. Paris is exhibiting manipulated scanner prints of fish at Gallery 10 from Friday, Oct. 1 through Saturday, Oct. 30, 2010. Her portfolio, Fish as Life, a suite of 16 inkjet prints, were inspired by the skeletal and textural beauty of a fish that was revealed during a daily meal. Paris chose to explore her subject matter further, delving into more observation and creating vibrant images that move beyond biological inspection and transcend the notion of death. The prints are sold both as a portfolio set, and a few are open for individual print sales. Six of the images have been printed on fabric hangings.

Artists throughout the centuries have painted and photographed fish, usually in the context of still life, where the meaning of the fish was often steeped in traditional symbolism. When viewing Paris’ work it is easy to contemplate the idea of these long established associations, or to muse over the relationship of fish to our eco-system and to our own survival. The artist acknowledges, “I present the fish image for metaphysical contemplation.”

With a grant from Arts and Humanities Council of Montgomery County. (2008), and the expertise of a retinal technician at the National Retina Institute, who photographed the retinas, and other sections of her fish, Paris was not limited to one snap of the shutter to create her image, she layers and enhances her works like a painter, adjusting and choosing to form compelling images that capture your gaze and demand further
observation.

One of the more striking images in the exhibition shows a mackerel with a brilliant red interior line that adds a visceral intensity to the image. The impact is heightened when this seemingly hand-drawn element is created from blood that has naturally pooled on the scanner bed. Paris strives to show not only external forms of fish but also the inner life workings in order to draw attention to the living pulse of fish and human alike. A 40-page catalog ($25.00) of the artist’s work will accompany the exhibition.

Paris, a career artist with roots in abstract painting, taught at Duke Ellington School of the Arts for over 20 years. She has exhibited extensively locally and nationally, most recently in North Carolina where Fish as Life was noted as a “Best Bets” in the Durham News. Paris received an MFA and BFA from the University of North Carolina in painting, and took specialized courses in Photoshop at the Corcoran College of Art and Montgomery College.
